The Woodsmith 50 Bowls in 50 Weeks Challenge has me thinking a lot about the various forms a bowl can take. Generally, the outside and inside of a bowl follow each other closely in shape. In the spirit of asking “why does it have to be that way?” I decided to create a pair of bowls in which the inside and outside shape are in no way related. A spheroidal interior and a square exterior seem as opposed as one could get. I also decided to follow the theme of opposition and left one bowl natural inside and out and charred the other black on the exterior. The interior of each bowl is textured from the gouge while the exterior is planed smooth. The bowls were carved out of red pine which works easily and has a pleasant color. I used oil on the natural finished portions. The charring was done with an oxy-acetylene torch with the valves set for an oxygen starved flame which is longer and not as hot. The bowls are an interesting pair together and have made me think about other possibilities, which is good, because there are alot of bowls that need to be made in the next 50 weeks.
