One of the best parts of doing a podcast for 200 episodes is that there are enough listeners who are ready to match us with our tone and approach. I appreciate getting the comments, questions and smart remarks. That's one reason that I've been leading the episodes with comments for a while now.
As much as we appreciate a funny comment, I'm also looking for woodworking questions, too. So please keep those coming.
Outdoor Finishes
In our first segment, I offer up a photo of my patio table. We built the table on the Woodsmith Shop a few seasons ago. The size is ideal for the my deck and in most respects works great. However, after just a year, the top looks like this. Blotchy and not real appealing.
During the spring of 2023, I had sanded the top and applied three coats of an outdoor oil-based finish. The type of finish that's supposed to be suited for this sort of situation.
The question is, what do I do about it? John and Logan had their ideas. But I'd like to know what anyone else thinks. You can send an email to woodsmith@woodsmith.com or leave your recommendation in the comments section on the YouTube video.
Popular Woodworking 279
Our ability to do the podcast stems from the support of subscribers to our magazines and online memberships. In order to bring us back to that, we'll give a recap or inside look of new issues of the magazines as they come out. Not does it focus our conversations (a needed value), but it also provides some background on how the sausage gets made.
In this episode, we looked at the August 2024 issue of Popular Woodworking. Logan talked about the authors and the projects.
He wrote several of the department articles. One was on shop flooring. John and I helped Logan with his floor last year. We filmed the process along the way. I'd never seen that large of a floor get epoxy coated. The process and product was different from what I was familiar with as well. However, the three of us got the job done much sooner than I estimated.
The primary floor covering is really just the start. Logan also talked about various mats used near his workbench and main power tool stations. One of his favorites is yoga mats. John brought up horse stall mats that are easy to find and durable.
ShopNotes magazine
This is the ShopNotes podcast. One of the articles in PopWood came from ShopNotes. Logan's idea is to help promote the magazine with content that folk can see for themselves. The project he chose was a tool cabinet designed by John. So we chatted about the design and the story behind the size and layout of the cabinet.
