Reaching under the table to push the router and insert plate up whenever I change bits can be a hassle. I wanted to be able to do everything from the top of the router table. So I designed the system shown here. It operates like a cam, allowing me to raise the plate without having to bend over and reach under the table.
A lever on the outside of the table is attached by a threaded rod to a cam located just inside the router opening. A wood block mounted to the underside of the table top supports the threaded rod and cam. I located the lever and the cam just below the lower surface of the tabletop. When the router is being used, the cam and lever stay out of the way.
But when it’s time to change bits, you simply rotate the lever, which lifts the plate about 3⁄4" above the table top. This is enough to allow you to get your fingers under the plate and lift it out. And when I replace the router, I can gently lower it back into the top using the lever, rather than dropping it into place.
