Low-Cost Slatwall Drill Press Table

By: John Doyle
One of the best upgrades you can make for a drill press is to add a larger table and a fence. While wandering the home center, I found an easy way to make them — slatwall panels.

Both the table and fence are made from pieces of the slatwall panels. I laminated a backer of particleboard to the slat wall for added stiffness, as in the drawing below.

The T-shaped slots are perfect for adding accessories: hold-downs in the table and a stop block (or two) for the fence. Speaking of the fence, I cut a pair of dadoes in the fence backer prior to gluing it up. This forms slots used to secure and adjust the fence to the slots in the table, as shown in detail ‘a.’

There are just a few other details to point out. Due to the size of the slots, I found that carriage bolts work best in the slots for the stop block and hold-downs. Then to ease the sharp edges, I added generous chamfers to the corners.
